Designing the Strada Espresso Machine
Over the course of two years, La Marzocco collaborated with thirty of the world’s finest coffee professionals to design an espresso machine, forming a group known as the “Street Team.” Their collective expertise led to the creation of the Strada, named after the Italian word for "Street" in their honour. The machine was developed to meet the needs of both expert baristas and coffee enthusiasts, blending functionality with design to enhance the espresso-making experience.

Enhancements in the Second Generation Strada
The second generation of the Strada builds upon the original design, offering improved features and modernised aesthetics. Its lower profile not only invites customer engagement in a café setting but also provides baristas with a spacious and open work area. Additionally, the Strada platform encourages creativity and customisation, allowing each machine to be tailored to the specific needs of individual baristas and cafés. It is available in two configurations, ensuring it meets the unique demands of coffee professionals around the world.

ABR Scales
The Auto Brew Ratio (ABR) is a set of scales built into the drip tray of the La Marzocco Linea PB and some other models such as the KB90, GB5s and Strada AV. They allow the barista to create a higher level of consistency with each brew. This integrated scale platform is incorporated into the machine's electronic system and is designed to take the rigours of daily café use, being released only after extensive research done by La Marzocco. The ABR comes in 2 modes:
Ratio Mode - Place the loaded portafilter on to the drip tray scale, allowing the machine to weight the amount of coffee grounds, then you can select an appropriate brew ratio and the machine will stop the shot automatically when the ratio has been achieved.
Mass Mode - The barista has the option to activate the brew group by selecting one of the programmed beverage mass buttons, once the correct mass has been achieved the scale sends a signal to the brew group to shut off and stop the brew.

La Marzocco Strada S vs Strada X: Which Commercial Machine is Best for Your Cafe?

The La Marzocco Strada S and Strada X share features like auto brew ratio, customisable pressure curves, and compatibility with smart grinders, but they differ in interface and user control:
| Strada S (Simplified/Standard) | Strada X (The Flagship) | |
|---|---|---|
| Control Interface | 3-button volumetric (AV) | Manual-to-Profile Paddle |
| Pressure Control | Static (Fixed pump pressure) | Dynamic (Independent gear pumps) |
| Pre-infusion | Programmable (Time-based) | Smart Saturation (Backpressure-sensing) |
| Portafilter Style | Standard (Twist-in) | Straight-in (Ergonomic/No-twist) |
| Profiling | None (Volumetric only) | Full Pressure Profiling (Mass-based) |
| Pumps | Single external pump | Independent internal pumps (Per group) |
| Scales | Optional (ABR) | Integrated as standard |
1. Pressure Profiling vs Auto-Volumetrics
-
Strada S: Designed for speed and reliability, this is an Auto-Volumetric (AV) machine. You simply programme your desired yield (e.g., 36g), and it delivers consistent shots at a steady 9 bars. It is the perfect commercial espresso machine for busy environments where staff simplicity is key.

-
Strada X: Is a profiling machine powered by the new Strada X grouphead technology. The redesigned grouphead enables precise pressure and flow control at the puck. Baristas can create custom pressure curves using the paddle, which can then be recorded and replayed for consistent, flavour-led extractions—especially with light-roast speciality coffees.
2. Smart Saturation Technology
The Strada X introduces Smart Saturation, a game-changer for consistency. It uses internal flow meters to ensure the puck is 100% saturated before the pump engages. This virtually eliminates "channeling," reducing waste and ensuring every cup meets your shop's standards. The Strada S uses traditional time-based pre-infusion, which is reliable but less precise.
3. Barista Ergonomics & RSI Prevention

One of the biggest selling points for the Strada X in the UK is the Straight-in Portafilter. Similar to the La Marzocco KB90, it removes the "twist" motion required by the Strada S. By simply pushing the handle in, you reduce the risk of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) by up to 12 times—a vital consideration for high-volume UK high street cafes.
4. Independent Gear Pumps
The Strada X features independent internal gear pumps for each group head. This allows you to run different pressure profiles simultaneously on the same machine. In contrast, the Strada S relies on a single external pump, making it a robust but less flexible "workhorse" for multi-barista stations.
The Verdict: Investment vs Performance

-
Choose the Strada S for a reliable, volumetric workflow that prioritises speed and ease of training.
-
Choose the Strada X for the ultimate in flavour precision, barista health, and cutting-edge profiling technology.
