Terroir and Tradition
For customers seeking a high-quality, ethically sourced, and flavour-rich coffee, here are some key details about this Rwandan single-origin selection:
1. Exceptional Terroir and Craftsmanship

-
Volcanic Richness: The beans are grown on the high slopes of Rwanda, where the altitude and mineral-rich volcanic soil are key. This soil naturally provides the perfect nutrients for the coffee cherry, contributing to the dense structure and complex flavour of the bean.
- The Washing Station Process: Rwandan coffee is famous for its meticulous processing. These beans are typically processed at communal washing stations using pristine mountain water. This traditional, labour-intensive 'Washed' method is critical as it produces an exceptionally clean, bright, and consistent cup profile—it is the hallmark of premium East African coffee.
- A "Balanced Workhorse": While many East African coffees (like Ethiopian or Kenyan) are celebrated for their bright, citrusy acidity, this Rwandan selection offers a rare, perfect Central American-style balance. It is a dependable daily drinker that still boasts the inherent quality of its African origin.
2. Flavour Nuances & Roast Profile

-
Beyond the Bittersweet: While the tasting notes highlight Cocoa and Bittersweet qualities, the underlying Rwandan profile adds a layer of subtle sweetness, often described as a hint of toffee or dark caramel. This complexity prevents the cup from tasting flat or overly dark.
-
The Medium-Dark Commitment: Our roast is calibrated to ensure maximum flavour development without charring. This retains the natural sugars in the bean, yielding a high-strength coffee with a rich, syrupy mouthfeel and a smooth finish, meaning it won't leave a harsh, bitter taste on the palate.
3. Ethical and Social Impact

-
Supporting Farmers: Buying Rwandan coffee often means directly supporting smallholder farmers. The coffee sector in Rwanda is built on a network of cooperatives, which ensures a higher price and fairer distribution of profits back to the communities that produce these fine beans.
-
A Story of Quality: Rwanda has invested heavily in rebuilding its coffee industry with a focus on specialty quality, creating some of the world's most sought-after beans. When customers choose this coffee, they are supporting a story of national focus on excellence and quality control.
Recommended Brewing Method
Given its Medium-Dark roast and rich, chocolatey profile, this Rwandan coffee is exceptionally versatile and excels across several brewing methods:
-
Best for Espresso: The strong Cocoa notes and bittersweet balance create a classic, robust espresso shot. It is ideal for all milk-based drinks (lattes, cappuccinos) where its rich flavor will shine through the milk.

-
Excellent for French Press: This immersion method enhances the inherent rich body and brings the deep Cocoa notes to the forefront for a hearty, traditional cup.

-
Great for Drip or Pour-Over: Brewing this way will yield a wonderfully rich and dependable cup of black coffee, highlighting the smooth texture and consistent chocolate flavor.

About The Roastery
Mont58 Coffee is the passion project of husband-and-wife team, Shai and Maya. Their journey began quite literally at home in 2018, when they took the plunge and jacked in their full-time jobs to start roasting coffee in a humble garden shed in South-East London. Shai, whose passion for coffee was sparked by childhood memories of drinking cardamom-spiced coffee with his grandfather, honed his craft on a tiny 250g machine.

This small-batch venture quickly took off, especially during the lockdown when the local community wholeheartedly embraced their door-to-door, bike-delivered coffee.

While they have since scaled up to a larger roastery in Ashford, Kent, and opened further sites, the spirit of that original shed, small business, big heart, remains central to their award-winning, ethical, and community-focused mission. It's a proper 'started from the ground up' success story, but with significantly better beans.
